This project aims to study the encounter between Portuguese and indigenous legal orders, in areas colonized by the Portuguese in different times (from the 19th to the 20th century) and geographies (America, Africa, Asia). We want to know how different legal orders were classified and hierarchized by colonial agents, how (or with which purposes) those legal orders were used by the colonizers and the colonized, how they interacted\u00a0and were transformed by different colonial situations and, finally, the kind of colonial legal systems their interaction and transformation gave rise to.
