Years ago, I started research on the history of anthropology and scientific collections of human remains. I have since published considerably on this topic. Yet, in the shadow of my research and writing, I devote myself to a spontaneous and modest undertaking: cartoon drawings. Colonial officers collecting skulls; racial scientists measuring crania; crania themselves taking life and agency. These sketches are strange creatures: in-between fact and fiction; observation and imagination; fantasy and fact; representation and criticism, caricature, mockery. For long I have kept this activity hidden, as if separate from my historical and ethnographic work on race science and collections. In this essay, I begin to consider these two activities together. I ask what comic drawings in the historian’s notebook might mean and what they might do; how they connect creative imagination and archival work; how, in the end, the making of historiographic cartoons might help us to cope with the colonial and racial pasts of collections of human remains.
