Abstract:

What happens when we take 100 years of cinema to the region where it was shot, and show it to the current rural population, who is unaccustomed with cinema yet familiar with the spaces, tropes and themes depicted in these images? This project combines archival research in Portugal and fieldwork in Angola to explore the contemporary response of rural dwellers to a programme of amateur, scientific, documentary and fiction films depicting indigenous populations produced between the 1920s and 2020s and circulated either in the colonial or post-independence periods of Angola.
