The Live Album and Other Ethnographic Objects: Amália at the Olympia

Lila Ellen Gray, Associate Professor of Music, Dickinson College, USA, realizará a palestra intitulada The Live Album and Other Ethnographic Objects: Amália at the Olympia, no dia 28 de setembro, às 14h, na Sala Maria de Sousa (sala polivalente), no ICS-ULisboa.

Abstract:
Amália à l’ Olympia (1957) is an LP recording made from debut performances of Amália Rodrigues at the Olympia in Paris in 1956. This album catapulted her into the international limelight (in a context marked by post-war diplomacy, the flourishing of the 33 1/3 record, new possibilities for travel and tourism, and Portuguese colonialism and dictatorship). What might we learn about the materiality of voicing and the shaping of celebrity, by de-centering the album itself and examining linked but peripheral (or abandoned) objects upon which sounding left its marks?
