‘Scientific occupation’ and the Colonial Anthropological Missions: an interview with Ricardo Roque

“This past May 2022,  Ricardo Roque presented on his research project concerned with the Timor Anthropological Mission in the late Portuguese colonial empire. Roque’s lecture,  part of The Pacific Circle Online Lectures, revolved around the concept of “scientific occupation”, a prominent approach in Portuguese late imperial policy, and considered the histories of the anthropometric and racialized projects undertaken by Portuguese imperial expeditions in East Timor, including their enduring legacies today.” Following up to this lecture, Ricardo Roque was interviewed on his work by Sebestian Kroupa.   Read the interview HERE.
